About
Signed and dated "John Lamb '03" in the corner. Like C. Baumann's tile trash can nearby, this is one of two in the series with a legible artist name; the identity of the other two remains unconfirmed.
This is the same John Lamb known locally as a surf artist and animator, an Academy Award and Emmy winner for co-inventing the Lyon Lamb Video Animation System. His 1974 animated short "Secret Spot" starred his signature character Willy Makitt pulling off aerial surf tricks in animation a decade before surfers could actually land them. In 2009 the California Surf Museum honored it with a permanent, immersive three-wall installation, complete with a tiki riding a hot rod and a VW bus full of surfer girls. In 1979 Lamb used his rotoscope system to direct "Tom Waits for No One", Tom Waits's first music video and the first rotoscoped animated music video in the US.
Part of the same undocumented series of tiled trash cans as Baumann Tile Trash Can, Missing Face Tile Trash Can, and Palm Tree Tile Trash Can.
