About

The plaque at the site credits the original black-and-white painting to Sandy Eshon in 1973, repainted in color by Rick Shea, Harry Cougar, Peggy Edens, and Lourie Gonzalez around 1997 and maintained by Shea and friends through 2004, when it was recreated in mosaic tile. Stone Steps Beach, at the base of the staircase above, was a hub of Southern California surf subculture from the 1960s and hosted the informal, roughly 40-year-running Stone Steps Invitational, known for joke trophies like wave of the day and wipeout of the day.
