About
Unveiled on April 19, 2006, after two years of planning and a community design competition organised by Leucadia 101 MainStreet Association. Diane Cauchon, an office manager from Carlsbad then working in Leucadia, won the competition and a $1,000 prize. The reinforced concrete surfboard shape — 11 feet long — was funded by the City of Encinitas Community Identification Sign Program at a cost of $11,000. It replaced a dilapidated wooden boat and pilings that had stood at the same spot. Photographed mid-construction in July 2026 as streetscape improvement works were underway around it.
